The NHAI Toll Plaza Rules 2025 generally focuses on the efficient collection of the taxes using the Fastag and to ensure there is a systematic traffic flow. The rules are to be followed by all as it helps in preventing frauds and improving the toll payment efficiency. As per the rule, no vehicle shall be in the Fastag lane for more than 10 seconds. NHAI Toll Plaza Rules 2025

The National Highway Authority of India is the regulatory body which is managed under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The NHAI manages and maintains the National Highways in India and it was established in 1988. The NHAI continuously passes new bills and rules which are for the maintenance of the roads and to ensure a smooth traffic movement. The roads are provided to the citizens and the NHAI is collecting the taxes for the roads in the form of Toll Taxes. The toll tax is now collected through the Fastag which is attached to the windscreen of the vehicle. The NHAI has mandated the attachment of the Fastag to the windscreen in order to remove the manual cash transaction system.

The manual system was very costly and it led to huge traffic lines and this was very chaotic. The NHAI has implemented the new rules and these are generally to the Fastag and traffic management and the major rule states that each of the vehicles shall have their own fastag and no vehicle shall be in the Fastag lane for a period more than 10 seconds. The Fastag shall be affixed to the vehicle as per the standard guidelines and each of the Fastag is issued for the period of 5 years only. The Fastag ensures that no overcharging is permissible now on and the amount of the toll is based on the single trip rate. What is Toll Plaza?

Toll Plaza is a booth which requires you to pay the taxes which is toll and it is collected as maintenance or upgrade charge for the roads or highways. The fees collected are very tiny, ensuring better roads and facilities to travellers are the main purpose of the toll plazas.

New NHAI Rules 2025 For Fastag

• Fastag is mandatory for your vehicle to make a smooth toll experience and the amount is deducted through your prepaid account.
• There is a toll free lane specially for the emergency vehicles.
• If you wait for more than 10 seconds in the lane, you shall not be charged a toll in that case.
• The Fastag is valid for 5 years only.
• Each vehicle shall have a single Fastag only as per the new rules of the NHAI.
• The users will have to pay extra charges if the transaction takes more than 15 minutes to process after the vehicle goes through toll.
• The toll plazas shall charge the rates as per the ones mentioned on the board and is same for all.

Single vs Return Trip Charges

• The toll rate is as per the single trip rate if the vehicle passes the toll plaza just once.
• If the vehicle crosses the plaza twice in a day, the rate is 1.5 times of the single trip rate.
• If the return trip is taken within the time frame, the Fastag charges the difference between the round trip and the single trip charges.
• If the return trip is not completed in the given time, a full single trip charge is to be paid. 
• The time frame of return trip shall be different as per the toll plaza.
